Vlog Episode #003: 5 Things YA Contemporary Authors Need to Stop Doing

This week's video is on some things that need to change in Young Adult literature, specifically contemporary. Give me a thumbs up and let me know what you think and if there's anything that you think should be added to this list.

SAVE THE YA PARENTS!

  1. Yes, yes, yes! These things all hold true for middle grade lit as well. I read predominately MGLIT because I am a middle school librarian, but I do try to listen to my students and what they want. I'd prefer specific music not be mentioned because it dates a book, but you are so right. And keep parents alive. Not jerky, possibly annoying, but ALIVE! I'm not a fan of the swearing, either. You did miss one of MY pet peeves... I wish teachers and librarians would quite forcing Newbery winners on students. Some of them are just dull. Very fun vlog, although I have to say that my own 17-year-old daughter dragged ME to a David Cassidy concert, which even I thought was weird, and she adores The Beatles. Maybe I just ruined her by, you know, being alive! Thanks for the laugh.

  2. So true! I'm a teen, and my parents are my best friends--why can't encouraging, understanding parents be portrayed by frequently in YA lit? Thanks for posting!
